Fat Tuesday Traditions
Fat Tuesday has always meant one thing to me: Portuguese Filhós!!
Let me explain…
As a kid and young adult many Fat Tuesday’s were spent at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Grandma would always make a huge batch of Portuguese Filhós (Portuguese deep fried dough cakes, similar to a donut) and we would all sit around and drink coffee and eat and eat and eat until we were stuffed. Now that I’m allllllll the way in San Diego, getting to Grandma’s house in the Central Valley on Fat Tuesday is rare. Below are a few iphone photos from when we happened to be in town for Fat Tuesday a few years ago.
Typical scene at Grandma’s house. My Mom and youngest sister Megan are there on the left. I’m sure Meg will be thrilled I posted this pic. :)
So the moral of the story : if you are in San Diego and you’re Portuguese, and filhós or malasadas are on your menu today at some point, I am available. ; ) If you know Portuguese peeps in San Diego, be kind and share this post.
How do you celebrate Fat Tuesday?
