Its no secret that I’m a bit granola and I’m always thrilled when couples asks to incorporate organic elements into their wedding.  According to, “each one of the 2.5 million weddings this year in the United States will produce an average of 62 tons of carbon dioxide and 400-600 lbs of garbage”.  WOW!  There is definitely room for improvement here.

In honor of Earth Day I thought I’d share with you my top three favorite eco-friendly wedding tips:

1. The Venue: We all know that the venue is one of the most important aspects of the wedding as its atmosphere sets the tone for the celebration.  Traditional venues, such as hotel ballrooms, use tons of electricity and are far from eco-friendly. Perhaps consider foregoing fancy and select a natural setting for your wedding such as a botanical garden or a gorgeous meadow.  Everyone loves naturally beautiful settings and you can feel good about the low electricity/water waste.

2. Flowers/Catering: Food and flowers that are grown free of pesticides and herbicides are not only better for our bodies but better for the environment in general.  Serving organic fare at your wedding supports local organic farmers and also means that less packaging, less electricity and less fuel were used getting that deliciously green meal to your plate.

3. The Dress: As if spending thousands on a dress you’ll only wear once isn’t wasteful enough (I kid – no hate mail please) think of all the fabric that was discarded as your dress was being made, what the material is made out of, how it was grown, the electricity used to make it, etc.  As consumers become more aware of their own carbon footprint, designers are providing gorgeous green alternatives to the traditional wedding dress that will not only make you feel beautiful, but also make you feel good about your eco-friendly choice.  Just look at these gorgeous gowns by Janay A. Janay uses eco silks, hemp fabrics and organic voile to create such beautiful dresses.
